In the book of John there are seven miracles of Jesus that John calls “signs”. These are miracles that point to Jesus’ identity as the Messiah and reveal His glory as the Son of God. We are going to spend the next seven weeks going through these “signs” one by one to see Jesus more clearly. Too often when we read Scripture we read it for ourselves. We search it to see how we fit, to find the answers to our questions and the road to our destiny, but Scripture was not written so we could see ourselves more clearly it was written to reveal Jesus, to show Him in all of His glory and power and so that we could decrease by increasing in our vision of Him.
In this first message in the series we find Jesus with His mother and His disciples at a wedding in the town of Cana. I don’t know if anyone expected this to be the scene for the beginning of Jesus’ miracles but this was the moment that the Father chose to begin revealing the glory of His Son. This passage is filled with compassion, obedience, changes in roles and relationships, prayer and intercession but it is not about any of those things. The miracle that Jesus performed, turning water into wine, was an incredible act of power in creating something out of nothing and even that is not the purpose of the miracle or the recording of it. John 2:11 says “This beginning of sings Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.” This miracle (and all of the others) were about and for the glory of Jesus. Wherever Jesus is glorified faith is born. Each time in Scripture that Jesus’ glory is revealed someone believed in Him. This is still true, where Jesus is glorified faith is born.
In this passage from John 2 and all of the others we will study for the next few weeks we are going to look deeply for Jesus’ glory. It is not our goal to find ourselves but to lose ourselves in the opportunity to see Jesus clearly. John said that when we see Him we will be like Him, let’s begin that transformation today and not save it for heaven, let’s dig deep into the Word of God through the Spirit of God and see Jesus in all of the glory of the Son of God so that we might be transformed into the Christ-like sons and daughters of God. I pray that during this next couple of months that we will follow the signs that lead to Jesus’ glory so that we might see faith born and grace received by all those that see His
