Matthew 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God.”
Jesus said “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.” Last week we defined purity of heart as being undivided, having our hearts set on God and God alone, making Him the one object of our affection, of our attention, of our desire and of our worship. The pure in heart see God, they see Him work, they see His presence; like Moses, they see His glory in action and His goodness at all times. If we continue to climb the ladder of the beatitudes, the pure in heart see God, His presence and His work and they become peacemakers. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God.” Let’s look closely at what Jesus said, a pure heart leads to a true vision of God, that vision does not simply put us at peace; it causes us to be those who make peace. What exactly does that mean? Think about it for a moment, if we are to make peace doesn’t that mean that we are sent to and enter into places where peace is not present, where peace is needed and even longed for? Peace doesn’t simply follow the pure in heart; the pure in heart bring peace to broken, tumultuous places. This morning we have a calling to be peacemakers, but to fulfill that calling there are a few things we have to see clearly and submit to and a few questions we have to answer. What if what we call peace and what God calls peace are two different things, will we submit to His definition? How much does peace cost and how is it gained? What is a peace maker and what does it truly mean to be called the sons of God? “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God.”
