So far in this series we have talked a lot about the person of the Holy Spirit: His heart, emotions, relationship to the Father and the Son and the work that He does in our lives. We have talked about His purposes, how He glorifies Jesus in everything that He says and does, lives in us in submission to the Father and Son, works to guide us into truth, remind us of Jesus’ words, intercedes for us according to the will of God and even prays through us when we don’t know what we should pray for. But the greatest reality of the Holy Spirit is that He lives in us, if we are in Christ then the Holy Spirit lives in us. Romans 8:10-11 says “If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” The most important truth about the Holy Spirit is the one that we are often the least moved by; we are often waiting to have an experience rather than becoming in tune to a relationship; too often we often find ourselves waiting for the Spirit to come rather than being constantly aware that He is here, not only with us but literally and actually in us. We talked about this a bit at the beginning of the series but now as we approach the end I believe that it is very important to revisit it and understand not only the reality that the Holy Spirit of God lives in us but also to attempt to grasp why He lives in us. When God created Adam He breathed into Him and Adam lived, their intimacy was not only in that God came and walked with Adam each day but it was that Adam was filled with the very breath of God. On the day of His resurrection Jesus visited His disciples, called them to come close to Him and “He breathed on them”. The Holy Spirit living in us is the restoration of all that God desired for us from the beginning. We were created for His pleasure and His pleasure is comes when we have a deep, intimate relationship with Him. When sin broke the relationship God took it upon Himself to fix the breech, to bridge the gap, to redeem that which was lost and to restore that which was stolen. The Holy Spirit lives in us not so that we can do things we couldn’t do otherwise but to restore us to the relationship that we were always meant to have. Today I pray that we will look at the Scriptures and see that the person of the Holy Spirit lives in us as the fulfillment of all of God’s plans to restore us to a relationship that is intimate, constant and eternal. His plans are to restore.
