In II Peter chapter 2, we see Peter’s clear and descriptive teaching about false teachers in the church. It’s not Peter’s aim to cause fear in the church or to bring condemnation on the false teachers, he’s working to teach the church of God’s power to deliver and to warn the false teachers of God’s promise to judge those who refuse to repent. There are a lot of descriptions used in the passage, but the one that might be the most interesting is found in verse 13 when Peter refers to false teachers as “spots and blemishes”. What does this mean? Is Peter already pronouncing judgment on these people or is he telling us something more? Jesus doesn’t simply throw away garments that are stained, He uses His Word to wash those stains out and make His church fully devoted to the Word of God as inspired and taught by the Spirit of God.
