We love talking about being the salt and being the light, but tonight I want to dig a little bit deeper and to really look at what it means for us and what it means for the world around us. Growing up I was not much of a risk taker; I liked to play it safe, I liked to not rock to the boat to the point that what I consider risky other people probably considered normal. I was a kid that did not just avoid talking to strangers, but was also afraid to talk to people I knew. In first grade I had to talk to my mom every single day during lunch even though I could see my house from school, but I just needed that reassurance, that comfort because I was just stuck in the spot of staying in my comfort zone. I know these are silly childhood examples, but the reality is that that idea of staying in the comfort zone, staying with where I was comfortable was something that really stuck with me even into my adulthood. I am sure if we are all honest, there are all times when we found ourselves wanting to play it safe. We pursue comfort, we spend ourselves to get more stuff, and we prefer to be entertained…
In this week’s sermon, “Be Salty,” our Youth Pastor Amanda Mackie teaches us that being the salt and being the light require us to be risk takers.
