Paul’s first command in the letter to the Philippians was in 1:27 “Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ . . .” Every command after that first one points back to it, everything that Paul tells them to do and not do is a step in living worthy of the gospel of Christ. His call to unity through humility, to think more highly of others than they do of themselves, to “let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus”, to work out their own salvation with fear and trembling and then tonight’s text, to “do all things without complaining and disputing” is Paul teaching them, “this is how you live worthy of the gospel of Christ, this is what it looks like to belong to Him, to surrender to Him and to become like Him.” I think it’s always important to remember that the work that God is doing in us is not to simply get us where Jesus is but to make us like Jesus, this is not a rescue mission, it is a transformation, we are not being removed, we are being reconciled and restored. To refer back to Romans 8:28-29, all things work together for good, but the good is defined clearly, that we would be conformed to the image of God’s Son. Paul is telling us in Philippians, this is how you are to live toward each other, this is how you are to live with yourselves, this is what it means to live like Jesus and then this is what is required to live as a witness in this world. The work of Christ is always for redemption so the work of the Body of Christ, not just our ministry, but how we live, how we move, how we think and have our being must be directed toward leading others to the redemption that we have freely received. We are going to talk about complaining and arguing tonight but we are going to talk about them in the context of pointing back to the command to live worthy of the gospel of Christ and looking forward to the calling to be a light in a dark world.
