Numbers 14 tells us the response of the generation of Israelites to reports of the Promised Land being filled with giants and walled cities, they gave in to fear and decided to go back to the slavery of Egypt. The path of righteousness will often lead us to some battles, to some opposition and to some obstacles that we never saw coming and don’t immediately want to overcome, it is in those moments that fear attempts to cause us to retreat while faith trusts God’s love enough to press forward. Every opportunity for obedience is two-pronged, it is first an act of love for God because of His love for us and then it is an act of love for those that will come after us. The generation of the Exodus were called to defeat the enemies in Canaan and leave the land as an inheritance for their children, instead, they gave in to fear and self-preservation and died in the wilderness leaving their children a war to fight rather than a land to inherit. My prayer today is that we will see the enemies in our own lives and communities and that we will rise up in the courage of faith and choose to wage war rather than retreat to comfort. I pray that we will decide to be a generation of people that leaves an inheritance for those that come after us rather than simply leaving them another battle with enemies we were never willing to defeat.
